Georgia State Patrol Post 7 in Toccoa has just released details of a Friday-afternoon wreck that left one driver seriously injured and the other suffering moderate injuries outside Clarkesville.

The head-on wreck on Ga. 115 at Habersham Mills Road was reported to Habersham County E-9-1-1 at 3:12 p.m.

A 2004 Kia Optima driven by 29-year-old Blaine Weaver of Demorest was traveling east on Ga. 115 in the westbound lane on the wrong side of the road, according to Trooper 1st Class Aaron Church.

A 2007 Chevrolet Tahoe driven by 56-year-old Deborah Cook of Cornelia was traveling west on Ga. 115 in the westbound lane when Weaver began to swerve back into the correct lane at the same time Cook began to swerve to avoid the Kia.

The front of the Kia struck the front of the Tahoe in the westbound lane of Ga. 115 at the double yellow line, according to Church. After impact, the Kia spun and came to rest facing east in the middle of the roadway. The Tahoe rotated slightly counter-clockwise and came to rest facing southwest in the middle of the roadway.

“Several witnesses stated that Driver 1 [Weaver] passed a vehicle on the double yellow line and continued to stay in the wrong lane until striking Vehicle 2,” Church said.

Weaver was trapped in the Kia and it took rescuers 45 minutes to extricate him, according to Habersham Emergency Services Director Chad Black. He was taken to a waiting AirLife Georgia medical helicopter that landed on Ga. 115 just west of Habersham Mills Road, which flew him for care at Northeast Georgia Medical Center.

Cook suffered moderate injuries and was taken by ambulance to Northeast Georgia Medical Center.

Charges are pending in the wreck, according to Church.

Habersham County Emergency Services, Demorest Fire Department, the Habersham County Sheriff’s Office and Georgia State Patrol responded.
