CLEVELAND — Not only were White County emergency personnel dealing with flooding and road washouts Thursday afternoon, but also a swift-water rescue.
About 5:30 p.m. Thursday, White County Fire Services personnel responded to Joe Franklin Road in northern White County for a report of a Hummer-type vehicle that had left the flooded roadway and overturned into Dukes Creek, according to spokeswoman Ana Newberry.
“It was also reported that the vehicle had a single occupant who was visiting White County from a southern Georgia county,” Newberry said.
Two White County Fire personnel and two White County sheriff’s deputies walked the rugged hillside terrain along the overflowing and fast-moving waters of Dukes Creek, locating the woman within 15 minutes, according to Newberry.
The female was holding on to a holly tree, with water up to four or five feet at the time, according to Newberry.
White County Fire Chief Norman Alexander, who was tethered by a rope, entered the water and helped the female driver to safety.
Rescuers walked the driver to a waiting ambulance, where she was evaluated but refused transport, according to Newberry.
The rescue operation took about 90 minutes.
