Pilot dies in small plane crash in Jackson County

The pilot of a small plane that crashed Monday night near Settlement Road in Commerce died in the accident.

"A witness state that it appeared the plane went up from a private landing strip and as soon as it got up, circled and maybe headed back to the landing strip and headed down into a patch of trees, a nose dive," said Jackson County Sheriff Janis Mangum

The pilot and only occupant was identified by Sheriff Mangum as Woodrow Howard Minish, 80, of Commerce. He died from injuries sustained in the crash.

Jackson County 911 received the call about the crash at 7:22 p.m.

The Jackson County Sheriff's Office, Jackson County Emergency Management Agency, Georgia Emergency Management & Homeland Security Agency, and the Federal Aviation Administration are currently investigating the crash site.
