Fire marred one dock of a landmark South Carolina marina on Lake Hartwell Monday afternoon.
Shortly after noon, several fire stations were dispatched to Dock 6 at Portman Marina, 1629 Marina Drive, Anderson, located off Highway 24 (Exit 11 off Interstate 85).
Zion, Townville, Centerville, and Double Springs fire departments were dispatched initially, along with Fork Rescue Squad, according to information from Townville Volunteer Fire Department.
“The assignment was quickly upgraded as a large plume of smoke was seen from each station as crews were en route,” a social media post from Townville Volunteer Fire Department states.
Eventually, personnel and apparatus from throughout Anderson County, City of Anderson, Anderson County Technical Rescue and Haz-Mat Teams, Oconee County, Oconee County fire boat, Anderson County Sheriff’s Office, Anderson County Emergency Management, South Carolina Department of Natural Resources, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, American Red Cross, and Department of Health and Environmental Control all responded to the scene.
“In total, over 25 departments and approximately 200 personnel from Anderson and Oconee counties responded and provided fill-in crews during the incident,” the social media post states.
One person suffered burns in the incident and was airlifted for medical treatment. Numerous firefighter were treated for heat-related symptoms while battling the fire.
More than a dozen boats were destroyed, with as many as 30 damaged by the fire, officials reported.
The largest inland marina in South Carolina, Portman Marina opened in 1963 and draws people from South Carolina, Georgia and beyond.
