The White County Board of Education held the first of two public hearings on the budget for the system in the coming year Thursday night, and school officials have included funding for one new program.
Dr. Jeff Wilson, Superintendent of Schools said they are not looking at any tax millage increase, even though the tentative budget figures show just over $500,000 short of expected funding.
Wilson said they will not know about the county digest, which is used in setting the millage rate, until August.
One new program that Wilson is proposing for the coming year is an alternative school, where students with anger or other issues can receive some special attention.
"We are at a time we need an alternative school," Wilson told board members. "We’ve got some kids that come to us that need some extra support that they can't get in the general education environment." The alternative school will be designed for middle and high school students.
Wilson said they will be working on the plan during the summer and have it ready for implementation at the beginning of school in August.
