First-time claims for unemployment insurance were down in Georgia in March 4.3 percent, compared to a month earlier, with Gainesville leading the way.
Applications in Gainesville declined 38.8 percent, according to state Labor Commissioner Mark Butler, followed by Dalton (34.4 percent) and Columbus (34.5 percent). Gainesville was also tops in the state compared to a year, with a decrease of 47.5 percent.
Only Albany and Valdosta, among Georgia's 14 metropolitan areas, showed an increase in claims from a month ago, 52.1 percent and 6.9 percent, respectively.
