Gas prices nationally hit highest point, Georgia prices down slightly

Posted 6:19AM on Monday 9th April 2018 ( 6 years ago )

Gas prices nationally hit the highest price point for the year Saturday, at $2.66 per gallon. Georgia is not far behind with a statewide average of $2.57, however Georgia prices are down a fraction of a penny.

AAA reports motorists in Georgia are paying 16 cents more than one month ago and 30 cents more than this time last year, with gas prices having the most expensive start to April in four years.

GasBuddy.com numbers are close to the AAA numbers, with an average of $2.54 on Sunday and $2.65 nationally.

"As markets have seen concern rise of a possible trade war between the U.S. and China, oil prices have been hit hard, leading gas prices to dramatically slow their recent ascent. While the pause button may be hit for the time being on the spring surge, it is still likely we'll see prices advance again soon," said Patrick DeHaan, head of petroleum analysis for GasBuddy. "Thankfully, the bulk of refinery maintenance is likely behind us, but keep in mind the volatility of the stock market has had a major influence on gas prices in the last year, so we may still be susceptible to sudden and dramatic change in U.S. policy and also still being susceptible to any lingering maintenance at the large refineries."

The highest prices in the state were in Hinesville-Fort Stewart and Brunswick with motorists shelling out $2.63 a gallon for gas; drivers in Catoosa-Dade-Walker are only paying $2.48.
