About 50 people made the trek from Grace Episcopal Church on Brenau Avenue to First Baptist Church on Green Street for Good Friday, the day Christians commemorate Christ's crucifixion.

The Stations of the Cross event has become an annual observance for Christians of all denominations in Gainesville.

Participants stopped at 14 different stations between the two churches, reflecting and reciting prayers recognizing different events that took place on the day Jesus was crucified.

Rev. Lee Koontz, Senior Pastor of First Presbyterian Church of Gainesville, wrapped up the walk with a message on the steps of First Baptist Church.

"I think that this is one day on the Christian calendar that most of us would just avoid," said Rev. Koontz. "It is a day full of sorrow and meditation on the sorrow and the suffering of our Lord and our Savior."

Koontz said Good Friday is a day that forces Christians to slow down and take a hard look at the seriousness of the crucifixion.

"While there are times we would rather avoid that, while there are times we ourselves aren't sure what to do with that or how to react to it, Good Friday comes again and again and again every year to remind us of the depth of God's love for us."
