Gwinnett County commissioners have given the okay to build a Bicentennial Plaza in Lawrenceville as part of the county's 200th birthday celebration.
The action came Tuesday night at the commission's regular meeting.
To make way for the project, Gwinnett County will demolish the old Fire Station 15 on South Perry Street in Lawrenceville. In addition to building the plaza, contractors will also upgrade an existing walkway and trail along Constitution Boulevard to create the Bicentennial Trail. The new trail will provide connectivity between the Gwinnett Justice and Administration Center, the Bicentennial Plaza and the Lawrenceville Lawn.
"This project not only helps commemorate Gwinnett County’s bicentennial with a permanent legacy but it also recognizes Lawrenceville’s role as Gwinnett’s county seat.," said Gwinnett County Commission Chairwoman Charlotte Nash in a press statement.
The project is expected to cost $1.875 million. A construction contract in that amount was awarded Tuesday to Surfaces Group, LLC, the low bidder for the project.
Work on the project is slated to begin in April, while the entire project should be finished by the end of the year.
