Mary Susan Powers will fill a seat on the Hoschton City Council following her win in Tuesday's special election.
Powers defeated Vanessa Hope Weeks by a roughly 61 percent margin, according to the Jackson County Elections and Registration Office.
Powers won the seat vacated by Scott Butler, who resigned due to conflicts with his business travel schedule.
City Clerk Wendy Wilson said city leaders are anticipating a second special election later this year, with Councilwoman Tracy Jordan expected to step down in May.
Turnout for Tuesday's election was just under ten percent, with 123 ballots cast.
