CARNESVILLE — UPDATED: It took persistence by officers from a number of law enforcement agencies and tips from the public, but a fugitive on the run in Franklin County for almost a week has been captured.
Officials said Robert Jacob Huckaby was captured near Carnesville just before 10 a.m. Tuesday and was taken to the Franklin County Detention Center.
“On March 20 at 8:30 a.m., Franklin County 9-1-1 received a call from a local citizen in the Fairview community reporting that Robert Jacob Huckaby was in the area,” according to a statement from Sheriff Steve Thomas.
Officers from the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office, Georgia State Patrol, Georgia Motor Carrier Compliance Division, and Georgia Department of Natural Resources established a perimeter and deployed tracking dogs from Lee Arrendale State Prison on Interstate 85 near the northbound weigh station, according to Thomas.
That tight perimeter, maintained by local and state officers from the northbound weigh station to Brown Road, paid off.
Huckaby was spotted by officers on Roberts Road, just off Brown Road, and he was taken into custody.
In Franklin County, Huckaby is charged with obstruction of an officer, giving false name, possession of marijuana, and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. He also faces an active Georgia parole warrant.
Huckaby, 37, ran from a traffic stop on the northbound side of Interstate 85 near Exit 173 (the Lavonia exit) last Wednesday, March 14, according Thomas. The search continued every day using tracking dogs, officers from several law enforcement agencies and, on several occasions, aviation resources.
Huckaby, whose lengthy criminal record dates back to 2000, was on parole after serving four years of a five-year prison sentence on Morgan County charges.
