In an effort organizers are calling "a public art adventure," flocks of small golden BURDS will show up across Gainesville and Hall County on Tuesday, March 20 - the first day of spring.

The BURDS initiative is part of an ongoing effort of the Vision 2030 Public Art Committee to bring community awareness of public art not only to residents, but also to visitors.

BURDS is an acronym for Brenau Urban Rural Discovery Secrets, and the idea is similar to the Mice on Main project launched in Greenville, South Carolina in 2000.

The golden BURD statuettes were designed by Brenau University art students, and initially, 100 BURDS will "hatch" on Tuesday.

The BURDS will be placed in both city and county parks, along historic Green Street in Gainesville and around the Brenau University campus among other locations, according to Vision 2030 Executive Director Elizabeth Higgins.

Members of the community are encouraged to search for the BURDS and post photos to social media, using the hashtag #2030BURDS.

Higgins said if someone wants to take one of the BURDS home, they can purchase one for $100. When they make the purchase, another BURD will be placed somewhere in the community, so that the initiative can continue.
