Seven roads have been closed in the Chattahoochee National Forest to protect them from long-term damage, as soggy weather and overuse has led to increased vulnerability, officials announced.
Due to the recent round of rain, rangers were worried about increased soil erosion into streams and watersheds, especially those that supply drinking water or serve as homes to trout.
The road closures (see the full list at the bottom of this article) affect three roads in White County and two each in Rabun and Stephens County.
"There are folks who must use these roads to access their homes or work," said District Ranger Ryan Foote in a statement.
"And more importantly, these roads may also provide the only access for emergency responders. We need your help by staying off the roads to stop further damage."
The closures will remain in place until they've dried out, which should be about a week, if the weather holds.
WHITE COUNTY
- FSR 44 — Wilks Creek Road/Poplar Stump Road
- FSR 79 — Chimney Mountain Road
- FSR 79 — Tray Mountain Road
RABUN COUNTY
- FSR 164 — Dick's Creek Road (above Kennesaw Lane)
- FSR 163 — Popcorn Creek Road
STEPHENS COUNTY
- FSR 92 — Red Root Road
