GAINESVILLE — There was a brief moment at the start of the 2017-18 basketball season when those outside of the Gainesville boys basketball team wondered about the Red Elephants.
Coming off a gut-wrenching state quarterfinal loss in overtime to eventual state champion Langston Hughes was bad enough, but piling an 0-4 start on top of that disappointment ceratinly instilled doubts about Gainesville's campaign -- doubts that the Red Elephants have since crushed with a vengeance.
Gainesville enters Saturday's Class 6A state semifinals on the heels of a 111-66 quarterfinal beatdown of Lakeside, Evans, and riding a 20-game win streak. No team has come closer than 25 points to the Red Elephants in their first three postseason contests.
That said, the Red Elephants know they must remain "locked in" if they are to vanquish Heritage, Conyers, at the University of West Georgia in Carrollton this weekend and reach the 6A championship game on March 9 at Georgia Tech.
