A former East Ellijay Police Sgt. is charged with theft by taking and violation of oath of office for allegedly stealing a money order from a suspect.

According to East Ellijay Police Chief Larry Callahan, Sgt. Michael G. McClure resigned from the department on Friday in lieu of termination.

Georgia Bureau of Investigation agents arrested McClure this past Wednesday, according to Callahan.

The Georgia News Network reported that McClure is accused of stealing a $150 money order from the purse of a Blairsville woman who was being arrested for alleged DUI.

"We are extremely disturbed by the charges brought against Sgt. McClure," Callahan said in a media release.  "We have confidence in the investigative and judicial process and are cooperating fully in the investigation."
