ATLANTA — Northeast Georgia's top swimmers put on quite a performance during the penultimate day of competition at the GHSA's swimming and diving championships on Saturday at Georgia's Tech's McAuley Aquatic Center in Atlanta.
Competitors from Buford, Gainesville, Jefferson and North Hall each swam their way to the medal podium, while plenty more claimed top 10 finishes over the three-day meet.
North Hall's Julia Kelly and Buford's Caroline Irwin each nabbed silver medals, as the Kelly finished second in the Class 1-5A 50-yard freestyle (23.89), and Irwin took second in the 1-5A 100 butterfly (54.76). Both swimmers enjoyed strong weekends, as Kelly also took bronze in the 1-5A 100 freestyle (51.57), and Irwin finished fifth in the 50 free (24.04).
Meanwhile, Gainesville's senior duo of Tanner Doan and Brian Monaghan led the way to a Red Elephants sixth place team finish in Class AAAAAA. Swimming in the pool he's set to call home collegiately, Doan -- who will compete for Georgia Tech at the next level -- took two bronze medals, claiming third in both the Class 6-7A 200 individual medley (1:50.39) and the 100 freestyle third (46.47).
Meanwhile, Mongahan finished with the bronze in the 6-7A 100 breaststroke (57.11).
Jefferson's Jackson Harvin also finished third on Saturday, taking bronze in the 200 freestyle (1:40.69). And on Thursday teammate Addison Kelly took second in the 1-5A 1-meter diving finals.
The Dragons produced several top 10 finishes over the course of the weekend, including eighth place finishes for McKenzie Klinck in the 100 butterfly (58.22) and for Janine Davis in the 500 freestyle (5:21.37). The Lady Dragons 200 free relay team also finished ninth (1:42.15). Their work helped Jefferson finish seventh amongst all teams in Classes 4-5A.
Meanwhile, Chestatee's Lindsey Grater closed out her prep career with two top 10 finishes, taking sixth in the 1-5A 200 IM (2:08.06) and sixth again in the 100 butterfly (57.55).
North Hall boys standout Will Crumpton also notched two top 10 finishes, swimming his way to sixth in the 1-5A 100 freestyle (47.40) and 10th in the 50 freestyle (21.96).
Lumpkin County's Mateo Golloshi also finished seventh in the 1-5A boys 100 butterfly (51.68).
Buford also nabbed top 10 spots for its girls 200 medley relay team, which finished eighth (1:52.62) and boys standout Nelson Montini, who took 10th in the 100 freestyle (48.44).
