Gwinnett County police said an intruder who was shot and killed by a Lawrenceville resident early Friday morning was a Gainesville man.
Police said in a press statement that James Brock, 50, was shot and killed at the residence on Mayfield Farms Drive around 1 a.m.
A resident of the home, identified as Robert Morton, 20, told police he came home around that time and went inside the house.
"He was upstairs and heard a noise downstairs. He grabbed his firearm and went to investigate. He ultimately encountered an intruder outside breaking into a vehicle in the driveway," the statement read.
Morton told police he verbally challenged Brock and that's when Brock charged at him. Police said Morton opened fire and hit Brock. Brock died at the scene.
Morton apparently lived at the home with other family members, according to the police statement. It is unclear if other residents were home at the time.
Criminal charges are not expected against Morton, according to the police statement.
