VIDEO: McKendree gunning for final flourish to stellar career

OAKWOOD — From the moment Anna McKendree burst on to the prep basketball scene as a precocious freshman at West Hall, it was obvious big things were in her future.

Now a senior, McKendree, has followed up on that immense promise, becoming the Spartans' all-time leading scorer -- boys or girls -- surpassing the 2,000 career point barrier and generally wowing fans for the better part of four years.

For the player, however, personal accolades take a back seat to that of her team's. And while McKendree is happy to have tortured so many opposing defenders, she's much more proud of helping West Hall to back-to-back region titles (2016-17), state playoff wins and back to the prominence the program enjoyed in the late 1990s and early 2000s.

As a senior, the scoring machine has also shown the ability to modify her game, adding defense, rebounding and distribution to her already formidable repretoire, leading the team in all three categories. As the lone returning starter from the last two seasons' region dominance much was expected of McKendree, and the basketball-obssessed senior has responded.

As she stares down the stretch run of her varsity career, AccessWDUN sports editor Morgan Lee caught up with McKendree and West Hall coach Bryan Richerson to discuss her impressive resume, what the upcoming postseason may bring and life beyond the Lady Spartans. West Hall's Anna McKendree, center, looks for a shot under pressure from a pair of White County defenders in the Lady Spartans' win last week in Oakwood. Mckendree surpassed 2,000 career points during the contest.
