The New Year's Day Polar Bear Plunge has been canceled because of "unsafe conditions" at the Lake Lanier Olympic Center.
That's according to a posting on the Lanier Canoe and Kayak Club's Facebook page.
"Due to water levels rising and unsafe conditions, we have cancelled the Polar Bear Plunge on New Years Day," the posting reads. "We apologize for the inconvenience but safety is our main priority. We know many of you look forward to this event therefore, we will reschedule it soon. Check our website for updates."
The event is a major fundraiser for the LCKC.
Heavy rains that fell across the Upper Chattahoochee River Basin starting on Friday caused a rapid rise in the level of Lake Lanier which prompted the decision to cancel the event. As of 10:00 Sunday morning, the level of the lake had risen 2.85 feet since Thursday.
This is the second time in the last three years that the event has been canceled because of heavy rains that produced what was deemed unsafe conditions at the venue.
