Mansfield Oil Co. founder dies at 86

John Mansfield, Sr., of Amelia Island, Fla., formerly of Gainesville, and the founder of Mansfield Oil Company and Kangaroo convenience stores, died Thursday.

Mansfield, who was 86, founded Mansfield Oil in Gainesville in 1957.  In 2012, according to mycelx.com, it was ranked by Forbes Magazine as the 50th-largest private company in the country.

He was also the Chairman Emeritus and co-founder of Mycelx Technologies Corp., a Duluth, Ga., environmental company that removes hydrocarbons from water.  Mansfield was the co-founder, president of Manlo Mining Co., Summers County, West Virginia.

He was the founder, chairman, and president of Mansfield Propane Gas Co. in Gainesville; co-founder and president of AAA Gas Co., Dalton; and, co-founder of Folger Gas Co., Dahlonega.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete.
