Girls basketball: Lady Falcons drop heartbreaker at the buzzer in Nike opener

PHOENIX, Ariz. — The Flowery Branch girls got their Nike Tournament of Champions experience off to a heartbreaking start Wednesday.

The Lady Falcons dropped their opening 45-42 Upperman (Tenn.), the defending back-to-back Class 2A state champions, on a last-second, running 3-pointer at the buzzer.

Flowery Branch (7-2) led 11-10 after the first quarter and extended its lead to 2-18 by halftime. But Upperman pued within 32-29 heading into the fourth quarter. The Lady Falcons were outscored 16-10 in the final period.

Caroline Wysocki paced Flowery Branch with 14 points. Ashley Woodroffe added 11 points and Ashley Scott 9 for the Lady Falcons.

Flowery Branch will play again on Thursday in the NIke tournament, which runs through Saturday.
