Fire training will claim former Runway Fish House this weekend

BALDWIN – A location where thousands of people dined on the weekends for years will be burned to clear the way for progress this weekend.

On Friday, Dec. 14, Habersham County Emergency Services will conduct a training burn at Runway Fish House on Runway Drive near Baldwin, which also formerly was known as Bob’s Fish House, adjacent to the Habersham County Airport.

“This training burn will allow the fire department and other public safety agencies to practice their fire suppression skills in a more realistic training environment,” said County Manager Phil Sutton.

Habersham County purchased the closed restaurant to allow expansion of the county's airport and further connect it with the industrial park.

The county recently completed construction of a new terminal for the Habersham County Airport adjacent to the former restaurant site and will open that facility in January.

Smoke and flames from the training burn at the former restaurant will be visible beginning at 3 p.m. Friday and continue into the evening.

Anyone with questions should call the Habersham County E-9-1-1 Center on its non-emergency line at (706) 778-3911.

Habersham County officials say people will begin seeing smoke and flames in the area of the airport about 3 p.m. Friday as the former Runway Fish House is burned as part of a fire training exercise.
