Fire investigators are working to determine what caused a fire at a vacant building just south of Gainesville Tuesday afternoon.

The building, which once housed a part of Chambers Lumber Company, was located on Bradford Street near Industrial Boulevard.

Jack Roper, one of the owners of The Tire Barn, which is located adjacent to the property, said he noticed flames and called 911 just after 2:30 p.m.

"There's just a driveway between our property line and that building," Roper said. "Fortunately, the wind was blowing the smoke away from us so we were not in danger of any direct flames. The heat from the fire, though, was incredibly intense."

Gainesville Fire Department crews remained on scene at last report.
