At the request of Mr. Maine, I’m writing a blog. It’s a blog about, oh, I don’t know, something maybe. Nah, only kidding, I assure you there is some type of substance to my ramblings.
As the sports editor around here, I find several amusing things on the old interwebs every day.
So, I would like to introduce to you Bo’s Musings. Where we will meditate, contemplate, deliberate and reflect on topics of my choice. Of course, you can participate, simply because it has “ate” in the word. Really, though, feel free to speculate.
The SEC Championship game
I have to say, I was NOT a happy camper last Saturday evening — 4th-and-11 from the 50-yard line = fake punt. REALLY!? Kirby might as well sent Barney on to the field to sing “I love you, you love me ... let’s all be one big happy family.” Dadgummit! OK, if you’re one of those "glass half full" folks, don’t even. If you’re going to tell me, "if Georgia would have converted, you would be spewing what a great decision it was to fake it." Well, … duh! Yes, I would have said that with the customary. "I told you it would work" — but it didn’t! So, go ahead and finish that glass of half-empty milk! The magnitude of that play was bigger than the time it would take you or me to get to Mars. It was humongous, and Kirby fakes it with his backup QB (Justin Fields) in the game. Hello, Captain Obvious… Use that half-empty glass of milk to fill up the cereal bowl! Anyway, I still believe Georgia should have punted the ball and, as Larry Munson would say, “hunker down one more time” on defense. I promise I'll let this one go later than sooner.
Should 8 teams be in the CFP?
I don’t know. It’s been a topic all week — should 8, 16 or 24 teams be in the playoffs? I’m kind of on the fence with this one simply because if the committee put eight teams in, then we’d need to have 16 teams. I’ve got a better idea, take the CFP’s top 10, put them on a dart board and bring in five and six-year-old kids to throw darts. Whichever four teams get poked first, are in. It’s basically what the CFP committee did this year. They sat in a room and debated over Georgia, Oklahoma and Ohio State. I honestly believe they played an old-fashioned game of “eeny mini miny moe” — instead of catching a tiger by its toe, they caught a sooner. Then, Mr. Mullens, the CFP Chair, comes out and says it was a very tough decision. Well, look, how in the H. E. double L can you say you went with Oklahoma because they won the Big 12, then put Georgia ahead of Ohio State, who also won their conference. Politics is my final answer. It doesn’t matter if the CFP has 4, 8, 16 or 24 teams, some team is going to complain they deserve to be in the playoffs.
Tech hiring Geoff Collins to replace Paul Johnson
Well, well … So Georgia Tech makes a massive splash with Geoff Collins. This one should be an interesting hire. Collins is 15-10 in two years at Temple in the American Athletic Conference. Collins is known for his defense, which Tech hasn't had in, oh, say, decades. Of course, this could be a good hire for Tech with Collins being a defensive guy. Why? It means he'll bring in an offensive guy to run the show – no longer will Tech be running four plays on offense. However, it's going to take the program a while to flip its roster. But, there's a silver lining for the Tech fans out there, if Collins hires the right guy to use the current players on the roster, Tech could run a very effective spread offense. Nevertheless, he'll have to find a QB that can throw the ball... As I said, this could become an interesting situation at Tech.
Gainesville girls are on the rise
It seems as if the struggles of the Gainesville girls basketball team are coming to an end. Over the last five seasons, the Lady Red Elephants haven't been much to write home about. However, new head coach Alan Griffin has come in and revitalized the struggling program, and Tuesday's win over No. 6-ranked Greater Atlanta Christian was very evident of the Griffin influence on the program. Tija Blackwell lit it up for 33 points against GAC, and Tia Shelton had 23. Things are looking up for the Lady Red Elephants, and only time will tell how good they are really going to be in 2018-19. My guess, Griffin is on his way to coach of the year status.
