Gwinnett county's stand-alone MARTA referendum election, planned for March 19 of next year, will cost over a quarter million dollars more than orginial estimates.
The Atlanta Journal Constitution reported the voters' decision to join MARTA and pay an extra 1% sales tax would cost about $769,000.
Gwinnett County Commissioners voted to call the referendum back in August. Critics said the county wasted money by not putting the referendum on the recent November ballot.
The vote will pave the way for heavy rail to come into the county and is the county's first MARTA vote since 1990.
