Smoke from a fire at the Humane Society of Northeast Georgia's Gainesville building caused all animals in the building to be evacuated Saturday morning.

Gainesville Fire Division Chief Keith Smith said no people or animals were injured and the fire was at a large heating unit on the outside of the building on West Ridge Road. He said the fire was quickly put out by fire crews, who stayed on the scene to remove the smoke from the building so the animals can be moved back inside.

Smith did not name a suspected cause of the fire and said that Humane Society officials are working to restore the heating unit.
