HOMER — The Banks County Commission has approved new life for a former restaurant at the intersection of Yonah-Homer Road and Rock Springs Road.
Homer Carver Jr. applied for a conditional use to allow a café/pool room in the former Katfish Korner restaurant building located at 3424 Yonah-Homer Road.
Carver said the facility initially will be open Thursday through Saturday, and eventually on Monday and Tuesday, but stressed he will not open on Wednesday or Sunday.
Additionally, Carver said no alcohol will be sold or allowed in the facility or on the grounds, and there will be no gambling or gambling machines.
Commissioners asked Carver to close by 10 p.m. on Thursday, and by 11 p.m. Friday and Saturday, except in-progress games on tournament night.
Carver said the roughly 5,000-square-foot building will accommodate numerous pool tables, and he will offer hamburgers, hotdogs and soft drinks for sale once the ongoing kitchen renovation is completed and approved by the health department.
Roughly 20 people attended Tuesday night’s commission in support of Carver’s conditional use request. No one spoke in opposition to the proposal.
Commissioners unanimously approved Carver’s request.
After the meeting, Banks County Commission Chairman Jimmy Hooper discussed Carver’s plans.
“My understanding is it’s going to be a place that’s going to have a grill and have an opportunity to get snacks, but the main thing is it’s going to be a billiard hall, family-oriented for a place of entertainment,” Hooper said. “As I said in open meeting, that’s how I worked my way through school. Through college I owned a pool room in downtown Maysville, and it had no problems.”
Hooper said if run properly, the way Carver is proposing, the facility will offer another recreational opportunity for families in Banks County.
“I think sometimes people have stereotypes of what they think pool rooms are like,” Hooper said. “I can tell you it can be a lot of fun. We’re looking forward to Mr. Carver having a good business in Banks County, and I don’t think anything other than positive things are coming from it.”
