Local law enforcement to participate in national Drug Take Back Day Saturday

Each fall, the DEA aims to take back unused prescription pills and keep those medications out of hands they don't belong to. Local law enforcement, like the Hall County Sheriff's Office, participate in the national initiative.

"Even thinking about families and homes, young children, it's always a good idea to have the medications out of their reach or locked up, but also to keep your cabinet clean, if you will, and have only what you need or are prescribed in your medicine cabinet or whereever you keep it safe," said Derreck Booth, public information officer for the Sheriff's Office.

Last drug take back day, Booth said the Sheriff's Office, along with another organization they partnered with, collected over 1,000 pounds of medication.

In Hall County, citizens can drop off their unused medication at a dropbox in the lobbies of the Sheriff's Office precincts on Browns Bridge Road and Cody Drive, but Saturday they will be set up at the Kroger on Winder Highway.

Both prescriptions and over the counter medications will be collected. Booth said after the deputies take your unused pills, it is later weighed and then incinerated.
