Johnson High School (JHS) is the next Hall County School in line for some big campus renovations.

The Hall County School Board Monday night got a look at plans for a new field house and an expanded band room for the Oakwood school.

Matt Cox, the Executive Director for Facilities and Construction for the Hall County School District, told board members the field house at JHS is the oldest such facility at any Hall County high school, so it's time for it to be replaced.

"It's 40-plus years old and not working well," Cox said in an interview after the meeting. "[We want] to give them something updated that's more appropriate."

Cox told board members he and his staff have learned from building new field houses at three other high schools, so while the facilities are similar, each time they build the design is tweaked and improved.

Cox said rather than simply renovate the JHS band room, the school district will expand the current space, which he described as undersized.

Both projects should be ready for students and athletes by the 2019-2020 school year.

"We're already in design on both of these [projects], so we anticipate having drawings ready around December or so, hopefully bidding in January, starting construction around February," Cox said.

He said construction would begin first on the band room addition with the field house replacement beginning closer to the end of the current school year.

While Cox did not know a specific dollar amount for the projects, he said funding will come from ESPLOST funds.
At Monday evening's Hall County School Board meeting, Matt Cox outlines the plans for two projects at Johnson High School in Oakwood.
