ALTO — A tractor-trailer truck that was struck by a freight train south of Alto Wednesday afternoon stalled before being hit.

“The truck appeared to have gotten stuck on the crossing, but was able to free itself,” said Banks County Fire/EMS Chief Steve Nichols. “It stalled after being freed and didn't quite clear the tracks before the train was upon it.”

The collision was dispatched to Banks County emergency personnel about 4:15 p.m., with cleanup lasting into Wednesday night.

The truck driver “was delivering to a nearby concrete company and was loaded with concrete mix,” Nichols told AccessWDUN. “We had a diesel fuel leak from the truck that was contained. The truck wreck and diesel fuel were removed by the wrecker service

Yonah-Homer Road is located at the Banks/Hall County line just off Old Cornelia Highway between Alto and Lula.
