While a fire can spark up any time of year, October has been designated as Fire Prevention Month.
Gwinnett County Fire Captain Tommy Rutledge said his department encourages residents to be proactive in protecting their homes, saying they should also be intentional and take specific safety steps. He explained by saying, "We want to encourage residents to check their smoke alarms, develop home escape plans and look for hazards inside their home that could cause a fire to start or grow in intensity and make sure their family is fire safe and prevent fire in the home."
He said there are several online resources for learning about fire prevention.
"Any information about home fire safety can be obtained by going to the department's website, gwinnettcounty.com, and click on Fire and Emergency Services. There's also information the NFPA, or National Fire Protection Association as well," Rutledge said.
