LOGANVILLE — The Buford girls softball team came into the Region 8-5A tournament as the No. 3 seed. They will leave with at least one home field playoff game and a chance at another region title after Tuesday's action.
The Lady Wolves knocked off No. 2 seed Walnut Grove 6-3 in their first round game and then followed that with a 4-3 upset over No. 1 and host Loganville. Now, they will await whoever comes out of the loser's bracket action in Thursday's finals.
Buford only has to win one game to claim the region crown while the team coming out of the loser’s bracket would have to beat the Lady Wolves twice.
All games in the 8-5A tournament are bing played at Loganville High School.
In the first game for Buford, junior Amelia Veal (6-1) got the win going 4 1/3 innings yielding three runs on five hits. Junior Ansleigh Hollifield recorded the save with 2 2/3 innings of near-perfect relief anning four while not allowing a hit or walk. The Lady Wolves jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead in the first and never looked back.
Seniors Katie Perkins, Shea Bayreuther, and Hannah Morgan combined for five hits and six RBI, with Morgan smacking a two-run home run.
In the second game, Buford battled back from an early 3-0 deficit to get the win. Senior Ansleigh Hollifield (4-4) got the complete-game victory in the circle allowing three runs on five hits and six walks, with most of that coming in the first inning. Bayreuther, and Morgan again led the ofense with Bayreuther hitting a two-run homer and Morgan adding a solo shot.
Loganville led 3-0 after the first inning but the Lady Wiolves rallied for three in the second to tie the game and got the eventual game-winner in the fourth.
