A man died Saturday following an incident involving a Taser while being transported to the Barrow County Jail, officials said.

Charles Williams, 30, was arrested by Auburn Police on charges of battery and cruelty to children, and "became combative before making it into the jail," said GBI Spokeswoman Nelly Miles in a statement.

The incident happened around 2:30 p.m.

During the struggle, Williams allegedly damaged a patrol car. During the struggle, and Barrow County Sheriff's deputy used a Taser in an attempt to keep Williams from doing any more damage.

At that point, Williams became "non-combative when he experienced medical duress and stopped breathing."

Deputies began giving Williams emergency medical treatment, but Miles said the suspect never regained consciousness.

Williams was taken to a local hospital where he later died.

His body was sent to the GBI Crime Lab for an autopsy.
