One lane of I-85 S. headed into Georgia closed due to failing bridge deck

Travel from South Carolina into Georgia on Interstate 85 will be hampered by an emergency lane closure of a bridge over Lake Hartwell for the foreseeable future.

The South Carolina Department of Transportation announced Tuesday that a hole in the bridge deck on the bridge over Three and Twenty Creek on I-85 southbound at mile marker 14.2 has resulted in the closure of the inside lane.

Weather permitting, work could begin as early as today, Jan. 17, but southbound traffic delays are expected, coming in at about four miles Tuesday afternoon.

“Until exploratory demolition work is accomplished to determine the extent of patching needed, we are unable to give a timeframe for how long the closure will have to remain in place,” a release from SCDOT states.
