ATLANTA — As all the hype and predictions of the past week begin to settle down, the Georgia football team will see if it can complete a magical journey to the program’s first national title in 37 years Monday night.
The Bulldogs play fellow Southeastern Conference rival, and title-horder, Alabama at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in the College Football Playoff Championship Game. Kickoff is slated for 8:10 p.m.
Georgia’s last title came in 1981 after a 17-10 win over Notre Dame. The Crimson Tide have won four championships in the past eight seasons.

Most, including the teams themselves, are expecting a defensive slugfest. Alabama brings in the nation’s top defensive unit (11.1 points per game allowed) while the Bulldogs brings in the fifth-rated defense (15.7 ppg) in the country behind Roquan Smith.
The Georgia offense, however, features a bruising ground attack behind senior running backs Nick Chubb and Sony Michel, who are now the NCAA’s all-time rushing duo with 8,259 combined yards. They surpassed SMU’s Eric Dickerson and Craig James, who held the record at 8,192 until last week’s Rose Bowl where Chubb and Michel churned out 326 combined rushing yards.
Alabama’s offense has Bo Scarborough, Damien Harris, and Jalen Hurts and the Tide leads the nation in scoring differential having outscored their opponents by a whopping 349 points (26.8 ppg).
