Gwinnett Commissioner Tommy Hunter is recovering from a heart attack suffered Saturday, he told fellow commissioners via phone on Tuesday.
Hunter was participating in the commissioners' work session via telephone, telling his fellow board members that he had to have a stent placed in a major artery.
"The doctors said (the stent) did well. Recovery will be quick, hopefully we can go home (Wednesday). Just want to thank everyone for their prayers," said Hunter, who is hospitalized at Northeast Georgia Medical Center in Gainesville.
This time a year ago Hunter was at the center of a controversey for referring to Congressman John Lewis as a "racist pig" on social media. Protesters were at the commission meeting calling for Hunter's resignation.
Hunter was able to cast his vote as usual, and provided the lone dissenting vote to the county's fiscal year budget.
