Union County coaches knew Cole Wright was a great athlete with plenty of potential -- but that's about all they knew for certain when they moved Wright from receiver to starting quarterback prior to the 2016 season.
Now they -- and all of northeast Georgia -- know that Wright is indeed a stellar quarterback and leader.
Wright guided the Panthers to an 8-3 record and state playoff appearance in his first season as a starter, passing for 1,853 yards and 15 touchdowns, while rushing for 1,450 yards and another 20 scores.
The scary thing for Region 7-AAA defenses is that Wright spent all offseason honing his craft, and now he looks even more deadly, passing for 656 yards and eight touchdowns against just one interception while also rushing for 477 yards and eight scores in helping Union to a 4-0 start in 2017.
As a junior, Wright helped Union transition fairly seamlessly from record-shattering quarterback Joseph Mancuso. As a senior, he and his teammates are dead set on going one even better -- eyeing the first ever state playoff win in program history. They will certainly measure themselves against some of the best this Friday when No. 3 Greater Atlanta Christian comes calling in Blairsville.
Whatever happens, the Panthers dual-threat has made it obvious -- he more than belongs in the pantheon of signal callers that have made this the Year of the Quarterback in northeast Georgia.
