(VIDEO) Player of the Week: Wood's all-around abilities make difference for Dragons

Posted 7:38AM on Tuesday 19th September 2017 ( 7 years ago )

Over the past three-plus seasons, Jefferson football's Colby Wood has built a hard-earned reputation as one of the top running backs in the state.

On Friday night, however, Wood showed that he is far more than just a ball carrier.

With his Dragons struggling to contain Flowery Branch receiver Jalin Strown, the senior stepped in to play cornerback opposite the Falcons speedster.

Not only did Wood quiet Strown's night -- after he had already hauled in four catches for 192 yards and a touchdown -- he also stripped what would have been a huge touchdown reception that might have helped the Branch pull out the upset. Instead, Wood's play on both sides of the ball helped fifth-ranked Jefferson to pull off a 35-29 comeback win in an emotional night at Memorial Stadium.

For his efforts, Wood has been named the Friday Game Night, Coca-Cola United Bottling Player of the Week.

The senior finished the game with 201 yards rushing and three touchdowns -- all in the second half -- as the Dragons fought back from a 16-6 halftime deficit.

Wood has rolled up 602 yards rushing and 11 touchdowns in 2017 -- but his abilities as a well-rounded football player are what sets him aside.

“Whatever the coaches want me to do I’ll do,” Wood said. “It looked like (Strown) had caught it but I felt like I could knock it out and I was able to make the play.”
