Public hearings set on Gainesville schools' proposed millage rate

Posted 9:41AM on Wednesday 23rd August 2017 ( 6 years ago )
Gainesville residents will have the opportunity later this month to weigh in on a proposed city schools tax increase.

Earlier this week, the board of education tentatively adopted a millage rate of 6.85, unchanged from the previous year.

The proposed tax rate is higher than the rollback figure or the rate that would produce the same total revenue as last year, using the current year tax digest.

School officials said rolling the rate back would mean further dipping into the system's reserve fund to support the proposed budget.

Hearings on the rate are at 1:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday, August 30 and at 6:00 p.m. on September 6.  They'll be held at the school board office at 508 Oak Street.
