CLARKESVILLE — A Demorest man died while working on a church construction site near downtown Clarkesville Wednesday.

Michael Alan Dawson, 43, of Dawson Construction died at Northeast Georgia Medical Center at 2:45 p.m. Wednesday, just more than three hours after the accident, according to Habersham County Coroner Kasey McEntire.

“At 11:17 a.m., we were paged to 1131 Washington St., for a trauma call from a fall of an approximate height of 20 feet,” said Clarkesville Fire Chief Jason Poole.

The fall occurred on the site of the new fellowship hall being constructed at Clarkesville First United Methodist Church and will be classified as a death resulting from a work injury, McEntire said Thursday.

“Our thoughts and prayers go out to all the family, friends, co-workers, and Clarkesville First United Methodist Church family affected,” McEntire said.

This photograph of the new fellowship hall under construction at Clarkesville First United Methodist Church, taken two weeks ago before the current roof and siding materials were installed, offers a height reference for the structure where a Demorest man fell and later died of his injuries on Wednesday.
