Goodwill of North Georgia has been awarded over $1.2 million in U.S. Department of Labor grant money to help young adults exiting the corrections system.
The community-based organization that serves Athens-Clarke, Dekalb, Hall, Cobb, Clayton and Fulton counties is the only group in Georgia to receive a portion of the $72 million total.
"When individuals exit correctional systems, they face a variety of challenges that inhibit their ability to reenter the workforce and their community," a news release from the U.S. Department of Labor stated.
The Reentry Project supports services that the labor department believes lead to better job opportunities and outcomes for people who have finished incarceration.
The $1,237,737 grant for Goodwill of North Georgia is part of over $32 million going to community-based organizations. The roughly $40 million in remaining grants are going to 9 intermediary organizations, according to the release.
The department grants come through its Employment and Training Administration.
