GAINESVILLE — Gainesville City Schools announced on Tuesday morning that it has hired Adam Lindsey, formerly of Jackson County High, to take over as Gainesville High athletic director.

Lindsey, who will also be an assistant principal at the school, takes over from Billy Kirk, who resigned this spring to become principal at Lumpkin County High.

"Gainesville, from an athletic director's standpoint, is one of those jobs you always keep an eye on, and one you aspire to take over," said Lindsey. "They have a storied tradition of great athletics and great community support, a combination that makes it a dream job."

Tom Smith, Gainesville's principal, said their search efforts focused on finding the right candidate to lead the school's "already strong" athletic department, and that officials were confident they found that individual in Lindsey.

“As a current athletic director, Mr. Lindsey has implemented processes that can have an immediate impact at GHS,” Smith said. “Examples of these processes are a student leadership program, marketing strategies to connect the community and school, monthly head coaches’ meetings, pre and post evaluation processes for coaches, and a self-assessment tool to gather feedback from coaches to support his own growth.”

In March Lindsey was chosen as Class AAA Athletic Director of the Year by the Georgia Athletic Director’s Association. Lindsey was also named the Region 8-AAA Athletic Director of the Year for his work with the Panthers, whose various varsity teams won five region championships and finished as region runners-up six times. Jackson County also produced a team state runner-up finish, two state semifinal appearances and eight "Sweet 16" appearances during Lindsey's time. The Panther's athletic program also finished 10th in Class AAA in Georgia Athletic Director’s Association (GADA) points in 2016.

"Everybody knows Gainesville, and because of players like Deshaun Watson and Blake Sims, and some of the guys that have come through the baseball program it is a national entity," said Lindsey, a Florida native who graduated from Duluth High before coaching numerous programs around the state, eventually taking over as athletic director at Jackson County. "It's certainly a step up for me, but I feel confident that the skills I learned at Jackson County will translate well. But, in the end, it's not about me. I'm just here as a servant-leader, and the success of the program is defined by the coaches and players involved.

"It's important that we be successful at every sport -- not just the big three (football, basketball, baseball) -- but it's also important for our kids to be successful in the classroom and to represent Gainesville in the right way. The biggest thing I can do to help ensure that is to support the coaches and athletes in whatever way I can. I want the coaches at this program to feel like they're family and all working together and supporting each other."
