The Department of Natural Resources will be hosting two training classes this summer at the Wilson Shoals Wildlife Management Area Shooting Range to introduce the public to firearms.
On Monday, July 10, the DNR will hold a Family Day at the Range from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m.
According to David Dockery, Northeast Georgia Hunting and Shooting Education Specialist with the DNR, the five hour event is open to all family members.
"The idea here is to introduce beginning shooters to firearms by inviting them to a public shooting range to be given basic safety instructions and to be coached through some live fire exercises," Dockery said.
Attendees are encouraged to bring their own firearms and ammunition if they like or both will be provided by the DNR for use as needed. Children under the age of 18 should be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Participants age 16 and older should have a hunting or fishing license or a Georgia Land Pass.
Then, on Monday, August 21, the Wilson Shoals Wildlife Management Area Shooting Range will host a DNR Ladies Day at the Range.
"What we want to do is open up the range for women or young ladies that want to be coached on the basics on firearm safety and handling to come and experience that as well as have the opportunity to shoot of some rounds," Dockery said.
Registration is required for either event. To sign up or to purchase any necessary licenses, visit the DNR online.
