Gainesville Police say the man who reported an armed robbery June 5 at a gas station was lying about the incident.

Robert Chambers, 19, told police that a black male showed up at the Valero station on Cleveland Highway, pulled a gun and stole Chambers' wallet, according to Gainesville Police Sgt. Kevin Holbrook.

"Through the investigation, it has been determined that (Chambers) falsely made the claims of armed robbery. In fact, he had never been robbed. He concocted the whole story," said Holbrook.

Chambers has been charged with falsely reporting a crime and making false statements.

"As of right now, we do not know exactly why he did this. It is an unfortunate situation," said Holbrook. "This gas station owner may have lost business over this."

Chambers was arrested and booked into the Hall County Jail Thursday evening, according to jail records.

"We spent a number of man hours attempting to solve this crime, and it's just a sad and unfortunate situation for everyone," said Holbrook.

Chambers has since posted bond.
