Barrow County Sheriff Jud Smith said Friday morning his investigators continue to investigate a shooting that left a Winder boy dead on Wednesday.

Smith said investigators are not yet releasing the child's name.

"We are trying to find out if the child intentionally or accidently shot himself," Smith said in an email.  "We are still interviewing the family and anyone who knew the child, and that is taking quite a bit of time to do."

Deputies were called to a home on Avalon Court near University Parkway around 4:30 on Wednesday afternoon and found the boy inside a residence suffering from a gunshot wound. He was taken by air ambulance to Egleston Children's Hospital and succumbed to his injuries Wednesday night.

Barrow County School Superintendent Chris McMichael confirmed Thursday that the victim was a 9-year-old student at Yargo Elementary School. McMichael said social workers and counselors spent Thursday at the school counseling with students and faculty.
