Brandon Sheppard made his first visit to Maryville, Tennessee’s Smoky Mountain Speedway count as he got his first win with the Southern All Stars Dirt Racing Series on Saturday night.
The win gave the Berlin, Illinois speedster a $7,500 payday in the 50 lap feature.
Sheppard took the lead from pole sitter Shane Clanton of Zebulon, Georgia, on lap 15, and then worked lapped traffic to his advantage en route to the win in a caution free event.
Chris Madden moved up from his seventh place starting spot to finish in second, with Tim McCreadie in third, Clanton in fourth and Eric Wells in fifth.
Mike Marlar, Brian Shirley, Tyler Erb, Shannon Buckingham and Jimmy Owens rounded out the top ten.
Points leader Casey Roberts of Toccoa, Georgia did not attend the event, giving the points lead to Bo Shirley.
Seventy-two year old Lamar Winkle, a member of the East Tennessee Racing Hall of Fame, attempted to qualify for the event, but failed to make his way into the feature. Meanwhile, Chickamauga, Georgia’s Dale McDowell developed mechanical problems at the start of his heat race, ending his night.
