GAINESVILLE — Gainesville City Schools athletic director Billy Kirk is stepping down at the end of the school year to take over as the Lumpkin County High School Principal.

Kirk was approved by the Lumpkin County Board of Education last Friday and officially resigned his AD position on Monday to the Gainesville School Board.

“It has been a career goal of mine for many years to become a principal,” Kirk said. “I had several interviews over the last few weeks with Lumpkin County and if I didn’t get that job I was coming back to Gainesville in my current position. I kind of put all my eggs in one basket. Once I was told I was hired and approved (at Lumpkin) then I told the folks at Gainesville.”

Kirk was the AD at Centennial High School in Fulton County for three years before taking over the same position at Gainesville. He will assume his new position at Lumpkin County once the current school year is ended.

“I am very thankful for the chance at Lumpkin. It’s a big job,” Kirk said. “It was a chance to complete a life-long goal of mine. I am very thankful and appreciative of the people at Gainesville for giving me this opportunity. I had a great two years here.”

With the Gainesville system also approving a new Superintendent at Monday’s meeting, the powers-that-be at Gainesville will now be on the hunt for a new Athletic Director.
