The man authorities say robbed Atlanta Dragway, shot a Banks County deputy sheriff and broke into a home and kidnapped a Commerce woman on Wednesday is dead after shooting an FBI agent in Atlanta.
Federal Bureau of Investigation Special Agent Stephen Emmett said the incident resulting in the death of Avery Richard, 32, of Atlanta, occurred when FBI, Georgia Bureau of Investigation and Atlanta Police Department personnel attempted to serve an arrest report on him in connection with the Banks County deputy sheriff shooting about 4 p.m. Friday.
When officers made contact with Richard, he opened fire, striking an FBI agent in the arm. That agent suffered what Emmett said are non-life-threatening injuries and is receiving treatment at an area hospital.
“Mr. Richard was killed in the return fire,” Emmett said in a telephone interview with AccessWDUN. “His female passenger, age 32, also was wounded and is in critical condition at an area hospital.
“Mr. Richard was the suspect in the shooting of the Banks County deputy sheriff and is deceased,” Emmett said.
The deputy sheriff is recovering after being shot while attempting to conduct a traffic stop on a vehicle driven by a man authorities say was Richard near Tanger Outlets in Banks Crossing shortly after 4 p.m. Wednesday.
