An investigation is underway after a pedestrian was hit and killed by a van early Thursday morning in South Forsyth County.

The deadly accident was reported at 6:17 a.m. on Windermere Parkway at Newgate Drive.

Forsyth County Sheriff's Deputy Doug Rainwater said 71-year-old Maria Vinci of Cumming was attempting to cross Windermere Parkway when she was hit by a southbound van driven by 41-year-old Adrian Rowland of Sugar Hill. He said they believe Vinci was either walking or jogging at the time.

"This is an intersection that is not lit - very few lights are in the area," Rainwater said. "The van was traveling south on Windermere Parkway and as the van approaches the top of the hill at Newgate, this female is either walking or jogging across the road...there is no crosswalk at this intersection."

Rainwater said Rowland attempted to brake and steer to the left to avoid Vinci, but he was unable to do so.

He said Vinci, who lived in the area, died at the scene.

While the deadly accident remains under investigation by the Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office Traffic Specialist Unit, Rainwater said he does not expect charges to be filed against Rowland.
