Suwanee city council is expected to approve to a contract totaling $278,000 for new fencing along the Lawrenceville-Suwanee Road bridge over I-85.
L.C. Whitford Company of Forsyth County was the lowest bidder on the project, according to Marty Allen, city manager.
"There's not a lot of structural work (with the project), although to put a fence up there, you'd be surprised the amount of engineering that has to go into it," said Allen.
The fencing will be steel (painted black) with backlit "S" medalions, one of Suwanee's logos, facing the interstate. Initial plans called for signage along the lower portion of the bridge as well, but city leaders decided to scrap that portion of the plan.
The bridge itself will not be nearly as fancy or artistic as the overpasses at Pleasant Hill Road or Jimmy Carter Boulevard, but Allen said it will still be more aesthetically pleasing than what is currently on site.
"The current fence has been hit by trucks and things, and it's an old galvanized steel type of fence. This (new fence) would be black, powder-coated — also steel — but it would have some decorative elements to it," said Allen.
Council members will give the matter a final vote April 25.
